Double Bass Gamut gut string questions

The variation between the gauges is pretty slight. I say just get whatever they recommend. Give them a call super friendly. If you are interested in doing a lot of bow work with them, I think it is really worth to make sure you get a full set. Nothing matches plain gut as well as wrapped gut on the lower strings. Gamut strings are the most high quality string I've ever used. Oh how I wish they would make me a high c string...

Y'all are a wealth of knowledge! Sooooo..... if you aren't using a bow - strictly pizz - and want some short-sustain horsepower out of an old Moretone and an old AS, would you go Lyon G and Pistoy D? Currently running braided Innovations on A and E.

I just got an email regarding the upcoming Spring sale at Gamut:

Greetings, Andrew--
I keep an eye on forums and noticed your Talk Bass posts, so I wanted to give you a heads up that the Gamut Music Spring Sale is set to run April 28 – May 8, 2023, with 20% off Academie and Tricolore strings.
Feel free to pass the sale dates along. (For those signed up) Our sale newsletter will be sent later this week.

For strictly pizz, I might just get the full Red Diamond set.

I’ve used varnished Lyon G medium and Pistoy D light on my ‘36 American Standard. Playing pizz only, these strings have worked very well in a variety of musical genres. I went with this combo based on Dan’s recommendation.

I would just like to point out, regarding the use of heavier strings, that the common string gauges we use nowadays for gut strings are more like what were meant for use as very light or solo strings back before about the 1920s or so, according to a few of the older method books that actually mentioned string gauges.

Others have experimented with going to what was recommended for orchestral use gauge wise (functionally the equivalent of taking a light-ish D string but tuning it up to G, a light-ish A string but tuning it up to D, etc.), and one of them was here on Talkbass and said that they were easier to bow that way, not harder. YMMV but it's worth considering.

Link here to the last time I talked about this same stuff, with another couple links within that post going back to what I mention in this one.

Oh boy oh boy, I just strung up my first set of used Gamut D and G thanks to my man @crd … you guys were right - totally different ball-park guts! The fuzzy little hairs cleaned up really nicely thanks to my daughter’s Emory board and a little patience. Noticed it’s more effective to sand with the wrap of the gut than against with these - contrary to my experience with other gut. I jacked up the action to about 9mm on the G and 6 hours in my American Standard is booming like it hasn’t in a while while. This is only day one - I can’t wait to feel these jokers break in. I’ve missed gut, these feel great!

The bowing is bitchen too — a whole different animal to tame!

I love them with the bow!!! Both pizz and arco they give back to you exactly what you put in.
