It probably depends a bit on the setup and everything, to be honest. I had a bass with medium height action and they were, yes, brighter than most normal orchestral strings, but not terribly so. Then I've come to meet a few professional players in my area, and some of them use the helicore orchs...

Helicore Orchs. They've got just enough growl to them to suffice as a good string for more modern jazz, they've got a nice thump to go back to older stuff/other styles, and they're nice under a bow too. Pretty fun to use, imo.

If it works, it works. If it works well, then you can actually keep doing it.

From a different thread, but I can't help but wonder whether or not this might apply to the idea of "If something is suitably ridiculous and makes almost no sense to try and play it as it is, just do something to fake it somehow that still sounds alright."

But then it'd be a violone, man. Not saying I wouldn't mind having one of those, though.

I can't guarantee any good playing on here, mainly because I did this in the little time I had just prior to practice today, but I made a recording of them on my phone. Lycon E, A, and G, with a helicore hybrid D. Plus me getting a little annoyed in there because I couldn't think of what to keep...

I actually like the orchestrals more than the hybrids (never have tried the pizzicatos) for jazz playing, but I play jazz with the sound of the earlier records in mind, not the later ones, so that makes sense. I don't need all that crazy sustain. =P One of these days I want to try Obligatos...

Not to derail the thread, but I'll definitely second that on the Helicore Orchs. I've played some other strings that didn't really seem to have any sound beyond a dead thunk pizzicato, but those have a nice tone to them. On the plywood I have them on they have a similar sound to what older jazz...

Nothing on Rotosound's "Tru Bass 88" tapewound set? I had those things for a while on my Kramer fretless and with how I had everything set they sounded more like my upright than any other string I tried.

No Jimmy Blanton? Oh, I almost want to cry. I went with Mingus. I just love some of his solos, and for all that he wasn't necessarily the best person, he was a great player, did a good job holding down a band when he walked, and wrote some really great tunes as well.

I would, if that bass was still with me currently. It's been taking an extended stay at the luthier's home - apparently it had more problems than anybody ever thought. That, and I don't own it, a college I play for does. But the possibility of me buying the extra Lycon sets they have has yet to...

Looks like I need to get a picture of the Lycons I've been playing on recently and get myself in this club...
