Double Bass Time for a Dead Spiros Club

Merry Christmas dead spiro-ers. Do I have a story for you. I'm home from collage back to my parents house and its a big celebration: whole family's home and just like when we were kids, we wake up and open presents from Santa (he's real ok!) Long story short I open my present and its a fresh, new, ALIVE, set of Spirocores (Parents said "well we don't know much about bass but thought you may need strings, and a few websites said these were strings for jazz bassists"). Perfect timing too because I sold my dead set to my teacher who was in desperate need of spirocores. Its a christmas miracle! I didn't have the heart to tell them that I'd need to kill them first :D

Looks like I need to get a picture of the Lycons I've been playing on recently and get myself in this club...
Great! Second Honorary Membership bestowed. What we would all really love, if possible: a couple of sound clips comparing Lycons to Spiros, but given the age of the Lycons, I wouldn't encourage any unnecessary or capricious dis-mounting and re-mounting, even for the sake of a definitive comparison. So actually a sound clip just as they are would be great.

I would, if that bass was still with me currently. It's been taking an extended stay at the luthier's home - apparently it had more problems than anybody ever thought. That, and I don't own it, a college I play for does.

But the possibility of me buying the extra Lycon sets they have has yet to be declined, soooo...

Also, just imagine how surprised I was playing on a nice Eastman bass with these strings on it (that tore up my hands; I love that steel string tone but my hands sure don't love the strings themselves) and realized the strings were older than I am.

Alas, I'm afraid I've come to love these nigh-unobtainable strings as much as drurb and some others do...

I can't guarantee any good playing on here, mainly because I did this in the little time I had just prior to practice today, but I made a recording of them on my phone. Lycon E, A, and G, with a helicore hybrid D. Plus me getting a little annoyed in there because I couldn't think of what to keep playing.

You don't get to hear how my voice matches up with my bass, though. Sorry. =P

i have on my bass the ultimate of dead spiro strings - dead spiro Stark E.

a force to be reconed with. it has outlived and out played various string changes and experiments; Chorda's on top, Evah' on top, Velvets on top, and right now Oliv's on top.

The only string on my bass that i never even consider replacing, 2 years + now ..

If I counted correctly, you are number double-sawbuck (20). With the Stark E, you are indeed the ultimate, "Everything goes with a dead Spiro E string"!

OK! After a dearth and dry valley after Christmas, I have several gigs in a row with a local jazz/dance band Wings of Swing, including a gig at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Civil War Memorial and Park. It was well received. I also had a Sunday evening church gig with a group put together by the choir director. The parish hall has a partial slate floor and wood hammer beam ceiling, and people are amazed how when we set up in a corner, standing near, the bass sounds thin or edgy, but let that sound bloom in the ceiling and bounce back half way across the hall it sounds full and foundational, a perfect support to the voices both for the team and the congregation. Our rector has asked me how often I can play, and, of course, the answer is, how often do you want me?
