I own a Harley Benton club

In the last weeks I gave my HB Beatbass a cosmic make-over. First thing I did was taking all the hardware off and checking all components. In the body I found a rather large chip of wood that appeared to have come loose when the holes for the pickups were made. I managed to get most of it out...

I own a Harley Benton club

Just bought a HB Beatbass. Have been playing electric and acoustic upright but wanted a BG on the side. Always likes the look and sound of those Hofner basses. Thought of buying a Hofner Ignition but then found these. Half the price but it gets pretty good reviews. Got it yesterday and used my...

Double Bass Why guts only for use in baroque music (classical)?

Thx guys! I have been using a mix of Pirazzi (E/A) and Olives for quite some time but got a set of Pirazzi slap strings (plain gut D/G) last week (after trying a Lenzner gut G for a while). I really like the tone, pizzicato but certainly also arco. My teacher frequently switches between Spiros...

Double Bass Why guts only for use in baroque music (classical)?

Hi all, Of course I know guts are also used for slapping, old school jazz etc. But for classical music it is always just said that guts are "suitable for baroque music". Why is this? I mean, before 1900 or so all strings were gut and so ALL classical music was originally played on gut. Why is...

Double Bass Thomann 111E BR or Thomann 111E SN ? What should I get?

I used the BR at music school. The finish on that bass (and the one we got as a replacement after the neck on the frist one warped) is kind of chocolate brown. I personally did not find that very attractive... For me about 40 euro extra for a bass that looks better but is otherwise the same...

Double Bass Jazz Strings for Stagg EDB

I've tried the original strings, Presto Balance, Spiro Mittel and Evah Pirazzi Weich on my Staggs. I like the last the most. Not too high tension, not too much sustain and not too metallic.

Double Bass Bow Makers in Amsterdam

I would send an email to Harry Jansen (Link Removed). He is a very well respected luthier based in Amsterdam and I'm sure he'll be able to help you (either in his own shop or by forwarding you to good bowmaker).

Double Bass Free Application that Comes up with Fingerings

Well that's an original idea! At least, it's new for me. In tried it and fed a 5 sheet piece into the program. It worked well and did not produce errors. I had a look at the first few measures and the fingerings looked to be logical. So I will put the fingerings on the score and have a go at it...

    Double Bass Stagg EUB megathread

Yes, the rosewood FB really looks, feels and sounds much nicer! My trussrod just kept on rattling so i filled the slot with silicon sealant. One addition: the newer version with the thicker headstock also has the screw in supportbars. The older ones were just push fit and came loose pretty easily.

Double Bass Anyone familiar with Stagg ADBA40 double bass amp?

I tried the Stagg amp briefly when I was looking for an amp for my Stagg eub. It sounded ok but my testing was done when I barely knew how to hold a bass... Later on I read a double test of the Stagg bass and amp in a dutch Bass magazine and they were not very enthusiastic about it. By the way...

Double Bass Beginners study pieces (arco)

I like the books from Keith Hartley: Double bass solo 1 & 2. Nice recognizable melodies and not overly complicated

Double Bass Another black dye question for a fingerboard on a DB....

I've used the Fiebing leather dye too in the past with a thin coat of Birchwood Casey True-Oil as a top layer. Worked fine on the maple FB of my Stagg EUB, no black fingers. But personally I would not dye the Jatoba FB, in my opinion this often has a nice color. My current Stagg EUB has a...

Double Bass Mic or contact mic... (for practice). I cannot choose!

Thanks guys for the replies! They are very much appreciated as I have no experience with mics etc whatsoever... My practice room is a professional sound booth situated in my garage. The only place I know of in my neighborhood that has "total silence". "Total" is of course relative but there...
