    Classic vibes

I’ve got a 2014 and a 2010 Matt Freeman CIC — both are fantastic basses, play and sound amazing with the vintage frets and himass, and make excellent backup instruments to my 1977 Fender Precision Bass.

    Origin Effects BASSRIG

For me the cab sim is absolutely sublime and it completely overrules everything I’ve used so far (HX Stomp, Tonehammer, etc.). At first I wasn’t a fan of the cab sim, mainly because I had too many pedals in front of the Super Vintage, which made the signal feel too squashed or compressed. Once...

    What overdrive for this tone?

A Precision bass through an Origin Effects Bassrig Super Vintage definitely nails that sound.

    Geezer Butler signature pick ups

Just installed a set of EMG GZR pickups in my Squier Matt Freeman Precision Bass and wow – I’m seriously impressed this time around. Compared to my ‘77 Fender P with the original pickup, the GZRs are definitely a touch less warm and “vintage woody,” but holy moly do they PUNCH through the band...

    Squier Matt Freeman quesitons

I’ve got a black Matt Freeman from 2010, a vintage white one from 2014, and a genuine 1977 Fender Precision. The black one has a sublime neck and sounds amazing with the stock pickups — really great tone, plays just as well as my ’77. The ’77 is all stock and sounds a bit warmer, while the Matt...

    Precision Bass Sound

Don’t sell your ‘77 P just like that. My 1977 has a wide neck pocket and some dents in the neck here and there. It’s completely original and sounds amazing with Fender flats. Invest in a proper setup. I’ve had a lot of P’s (Am Pro, Player, Am Standard, etc.), but the ’77 truly has that classic...

Bass D.I with amp SIM for live gigs?

Here’s my ampless setup: EBS Multicomp → EHX Bass Soul Food → SansAmp Programmable BDDI. I prefer the older BDDI models over the V2; with the blend set to 40%, there’s plenty of mids. It sounds incredible through both IEMs and FOH when paired with my Matt Freeman P Bass and TI strings.

    SansAmp BDDI alternatives

The SV is a great preamp pedal, but the DI out sound was unusable for me (I play ampless). I placed it in front of a DI box so I could use the ‘amp out’ EQ, and it sounded really good that way. However, I ended up going back to the Sansamp BDDI for live use. Reliable Plug & play.

    SansAmp BDDI alternatives

I’ve tried many DI/preamps like the Tonehammer and the Origin Super Vintage. With the blend at 40%, I still find the BDDI the absolute best after all these years. I also find the earlier version easier to dial in for my sound than the v2 (go figure). Set the bass and treble to 10 o’clock, and...

Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

Thanks. I have basses that are three times as expensive but can’t match the Matt Freeman in terms of sound. 🙈

Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

Added a Vintage White Matt Freeman from 2015 to the collection. I gave her a proper setup and put on my favorite strings (TI flats). She sounds brighter than my black 2010 Matt Freeman bass and has a great growl. The white finish has aged beautifully as well.

Need Help - Line 6 HX Stomp

I’ve been playing ampless since a few months (with IEM’s) and it works great once you’re used to it. It’s important to take your time with your PA technician to set up the mix properly. Most interfaces also have an app that lets you adjust the band mix perfectly. We use the CQ app from Allen &...

Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

I would only consider it if they manage to get the neck as good as in the original run.

Squier Classic Vibe Club (Part 3)

I had already posted my Squier Precision ‘Matt Freeman’ in the Black&Maple thread, but I’d love to share it here again. A Matt Freeman was my first bass ever, and out of nostalgia, I bought one again this summer from Zjon’s Guitar Store in the Netherlands. The bass is from 2010, completely...
