I had a question. Based on what I know and have seen on pre-CBS basses, the pole pieces look like they are chamfered while with others it's quite hard to tell. Were pole pieces always chamfered during the pre-CBS years? There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there, but an article...
I wouldn't doubt that at all. Fortunately, that's the extent of the damage. Besides that issue, the neck is fine. The truss rod is fully functional and stable. Hopefully, no problems arise from it in the future, but the repairs appears to be holding well.
I'm not sure what happened, but it seems that somebody switched out the original 62 neck for a neck from 1960. I wish that Fender had kept better records from their early days of production. The neck is the best feeling neck I've ever played on. How's the neck on your Duo Sonic?
Yeah, seems like that's the case. It was quite a nice surprise when I removed the neck and saw the date mark. I was not expecting that. I'm not sure of the story behind the bass, unfortunately. It has all the hallmarks of a bass made by Fender during the pre-CBS years. The dowel holes on the...
Thank you for your input. I ended up taking off the neck and there is a 9-60 written in pencil, and it looks like the body wood is ash based on what I saw in the neck pocket.
It had a repair done to the heel of the neck, so it looks like a 3 piece neck. I can take some better pictures of it later this afternoon, but here's a better picture.
Hello Talkbass,
I had some questions about a 1962 Precision bass. I was hoping that I could get some input from individuals knowledgeable about vintage Fenders. It's a slab board with pots with codes 304 6237 as well as 70-2125-0034. The serial number is 86690, so all the dates point to it...
I'll upload some pictures of the pole pieces in a bit. I find it interesting that the bass has a slab board, but the pots are dated to the second week of September. I know that Fender transitioned to veneer boards in August of '62. There must've been a neck left over from before the transition...
This bass has pots with serial number 304 6237, which puts it in the week of September 10, 1962, but it has a slab board. Anyone else have an early 60s neck with side dot markers on it like this? The side dot is in the fretboard rather than the neck and fingerboard seam.
I recall seeing other sources cite the use of black bobbins during the mid 70s. One of the pickup covers looks like it is missing these indentations, so maybe one was replaced during the 70s. LIke I said before, I find it hard to believe that someone would replace just the covers unless they...
