I think getting an acoustic bass is a fantastic idea, but not for the reason you mentioned. Most ABGs are going to be acoustic-electric anyway, but I’d be hesitant on making it your main axe for live playing without some sort of amplification (which might defeat your goal).

My first basses were 5-strings, but I’m just much more comfortable playing on a 4 (neck width, string muting, tone). Low D is my favorite low note, too; just sold all my 5s and stuck with I seemed to grab off the stand most often.

I almost got one. Digitech says that this won’t work well for bass, so I ended up getting the Bass Whammy.

I ended up buying a Bass Whammy pedal since it does octave, polyphonic and detuning functions. I forgot all about that hipshot d-tuner…any experience with those?

As a general rule of thumb, thumbs are better for smacking the low string than for standards of measurement. I’ve never heard anything about 10s being the go-to speaker size for SS, but I know a lot of people who seem to think that smaller speakers are punchier on the high mid-range. So maybe?

The original key is in Bbmaj, with the new key adjusted down a half step (A). In the recording the bassist has tuned down to Bb on the fifth string, so now I’m at a low A. He doesn’t always play the low Bb, however, so you’re probably right in thinking I can get away with just playing a little...
