    Big difference in P basses?

To my ear the biggest difference is the sustain. The 16 decays much sooner after the articulation.

    Lost Loves

I had an early custom Fodera that I bought from my high school bass teacher in about 1986. I decided to focus more on trombone and sold it.

    Wood question

I briefly owned a very early custom Fodera with a solid rosewood body. It was a long time ago and I was very young and ignorant, but I wouldn't do that again. It had been made for my teacher, who sold it to me for the other student he had sold it to. It was too heavy for him to take on gigs, and...

    Question about Summer of '69

There are low Ds on the first Boston album too, released in 1976. And low Dbs on some Van Halen tunes from Fair Warning (I think), released in 1981.

Why is Alex Lifeson so under-recognized, overlooked, underrated and overshadowed as a musician?

GL and NP both created very distinctive sounds that made them instantly recognizable. There was some evolution over time, but each had a personal style that was quite different from their contemporaries on the same instruments. I think Alex Lifeson was much more of a chameleon, varying the...

    beginner P bass kit recommendation?

Thanks...the Fretwire one will require cutting the headstock - I will have access to good tools for that and a friend who knows how to use them - but it does have an alder body. And I might very well be keeping my eye out for a good deal on a used J bass style neck to replace it at some point...

    beginner P bass kit recommendation?

Specifically, I'm looking at the kit from The Fretwire as compared to the kit from Solo in Canada. Any experience or recommendation of one over the other?

    budget J neck?

I'm idly looking to put together a P bass with J neck from used or otherwise budget parts. There are a lot of Chinese replacement necks out there on eBay and Reverb, and also some used Squier, AllParts, and Mighty Mite for pretty reasonable prices. I've done some electronics repair and...

What to do with your stimulus check if you don't really need it?

There are absolutely are. And I would urge all of you who can afford it to give to one of them. The simple fact is that professional musicians (like me) have significant portions of their incomes simply unavailable right now. We do not need stimulus; we need help in the form of money in order to...

what are the best type strings for fretless bass, flats, round, half-round ...

I just took the frets out of my cheap Yamaha and bought a set of EB Cobalt Flats for it. I love the way they sound.

    GHS Brite Flats

A follow up question: why are the gauges so different from GHS Bass Boomers? I like the standard 45-105 Boomers on my Jazz - which gauge Brite Flats should I get for a fretless?

It's a "help me pick a first bass" thread, but maybe with some interesting angles

I came back to bass after more than 30 years off, and I'm a professional musician on a different instrument...so not exactly a beginner like you, but physically it felt very strange when I started again. If you don't know about product reviews on the NY Times Wirecutter site, they are great...

First Bass for a previous guitar player

+1 I found a used LB75 for well under $650, and had a pro set-up done that still kept it well under $650. The guy I bought it from threw in 2 distortion pedals, 2 tuners, a beat-up gig bag, and a bunch of picks and other stuff. The neck is super friendly, and the electronics - with...

Resolved: was yada yada what should I do?

You will do yourself more harm than good by getting a lawyer involved. You don't want a reputation as somebody who sues other musicians - and even if it's just a cease and desist letter, the gossip will likely elevate it to a lawsuit. I also think that songwriter is doing himself more harm...
