I just ordered an Audere pre for a Lakland 44-01 and am thinking of the Nordstrand Fat Stacks. My only concern is that the Audere uses a different method to achieve amplification and isn't as "hot" as other pre's, I hear. Couple that with the Fat Stacks slightly lower output, will I have volume...

Lots of good options out there.....Spector is a great instrument, even their ~$500 line. The Ray34 I have is a sustain monster and it was $699. Modulus are great, but new ones (VJ) start somewhere around the $1500 new and go up to $3k-$5k (Quantum) optioned out.

I had the NJ4SE's in a Modulus VJ with a Bart 2-band pre.....absolute beefcakes. They retained a good deal of clarity, but were beefcakes.

I found that speakers break in in a few hours of continuous playing on average. Because I don't play 8 hrs/day, it takes me a week or so to break in. You can do it in a day.....there are some ways to speed that process up if you have the stuff to do it. In a loud(er) band situation, you may here...

Though I use it on my first passive bass in 20 years (CV-P), I tend to use it a lot more on my active basses......I never really thought about why that is the case, though.....

If you can afford it, have both. There is enough differences to warrant both, I think......if you have the capital. These days, the options are huge! I just picked up a CV-P having never had a P. I really like it........as others have said, it doesn't sound great practicing solo, but comes alive...

I'm sure this is a negative factor. Boiling doesn't make string sound brand new. Nevertheless, I can't complain about the results. I've tried a few of the cleaners (Gibson, Fast Fret) and they make the strings slicker, but don't really help in cleaning and dying. I do wipe down with alcohol pads...

+1. I do it all the time.........for 15 years or more. While it's not like a new set, I've always found it valuable. I've boiled a set as much as 5x with diminishing returns each time, but still useful. So far, never had a string break, rust out, or go completely dead from boiling. I want to try...

I bought the CV-P in fiesta red. I love it so far. It plays pretty well and sits good in a mix.:bassist:
