Are there any benefits to tuning down bass besides simply getting a lower sound? Since it changes where you play certain chords, can it give other advantages besides just sounding lower?

In spite of a lot of prog. metal becoming somewhat predictable, there are gems still in that genre. Some do it differently from others, some do it better than others. I find Exivious falls in in the latter category.
