I always just pick it out note for note, then figure out the correct positions and transitions. Then it's just repeating it and slowly building speed. It has to become muscle memory so you can focus on technique.

The guys/gals that are telling you to play fast you have to slow down first. That is right on! You have to be able to hear each note. When the notes start running together and you no longer can hear each individual note "stuff" turns to Jell-O. So slow down till you can hear each individual note, then speed up.
The thing that holds a lot of guys back is that they practice a figure slowly with one fingering and then play it at the tempo they want to be at with another fingering. If you do the work at increments of increasing tempo, it won't happen. You also can't expect overnight improvement, especially if you're just starting out, but it will happen with consistent and correct practice.
You can type before coffee??? Nothing besides a trip to the bathroom happens before coffee.
I get what you're saying -- very philanthropic of you, actually. Ordinarily I would say you're right. There's some history here you're not aware of though. It was no problem.
Thanks for the advice everyone! That's basically what I'm doing -- playing it really slow (I couldn't play it faster to begin with! xD). I am starting to notice a little bit of improvement in speed. I'm kind of galloping along the 9-7 frets with three fingers, if that makes any sense. I think where I'm messing up right now is when I speed up my picking is not very clear. It'd help if I could plug into my amp right now so I could hear myself but I'm getting it fixed.
So yeah back to more slow repetition!
Oh, and my instructors methods were criticized. I don't think he was just in the mindset of "WE NEED TO GET YOU PLAYING FAST" but mentioned that as one thing that this song would help me work on. That said, we haven't played in scales and stuff in a while and I hope he isn't succumbing to the pressure of giving bad lessons to keep it from being "boring." Someone said this is a blues scale, which is something we've worked on in the past though so maybe that's why he chose this one. It was the same idea with "Money." I'll never forget where B-minor is after that.

Yeah, the amp will help alot as you wont have to dig in as much!! Another great song where the main riff is literally just the blues scale is "sunshine of your love", though its not fast really
