    For Sale Hoyt PJ5 Fretless

Howdy folks. Mr. Bovinehost ( sounds like some sort of witness protection alias) is a friend . Somebody asked me to fill in some of the details that Mr. BH may not know about. So here goes 34 scale 22 fret lines probably 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 at nut Front to back thickness at nut: 22 mm tapering to...

    My new Frankenbass…

Skulls suck (as you know by now, nephew: ) One way to coax the neck is to tune the strings up a step-step and a half when not in use but be sure the truss rod nut is backed off. If it was sitting with TR nut tension in a basement, there’s a good chance the truss rod might have developed some...

TRADED Karl Hoyt 4 flame red maple & purpleheart

I'm terrible about keeping good records of my basses: but that was a pretty fun bass. Nordstrand big singles give it a wonderful sound. The neck is probably 12" radius fingerboard, EVO frets, 22mm thick at the nut and 1-9/16 wide at the nut: standard 3/4 string spread at the bridge.... Good...

SOLD The Infamous Karl Hoyt Fretless Funkifizer Jazz Bass

..... so that means you have those old Dimarzios that were in it available ? :-). And just as a clarifier: I did not build up this bass : I got it in trade for a commission. I did do a fair amount of work to it, including gigging with it quite a bit. I tend to agree that the top is probably...

Custom Short Scales - 32" and under - no factory guitars

I may be mistaken, but I think when we did the specs for this bass we did E,A,D,G,C,F.....BUT it was a while ago that I built it. If you want it as a BEADGC, you'd really have to put a BIG B to tighten it up.

What are the Best Values in NEW Boutique Basses?

Thanks (belatedly) for the nice comments. The gekkos are just a whim....... one was ordered by a client... I got two of them and put one in another spec bass......I do all kinds of inlays (or not) in my instruments.

What are the Best Values in NEW Boutique Basses?

Thanks, Matthew Brown for the lovely endorsement, but don't expect a discount on the bass I build you  Actually, I won't be accepting any commissions until probably October of this year, but I do have some 'spec' basses that will be offered from time to time......My prices range from...

How much should a custom luthier make per hour?

Excellent, well thought out, concise, insightful stuff, Bruce. Package that and you could teach that in small business classes at the local community college or university! Karl

    ACG Finished Work.

no thanks needed, my friend. you continue to raise the bar for outstanding custom basses that are gorgeous but EXTREMELY PLAYABLE. there are plenty of good looking instruments out there, but the combination of great looks and functionality elude many builders. kfh
