What's On Your Workbench?

I took some tips from a local master furniture builder in my hometown dying/staining and got my first coat of Tru-oil on.. Lots more work to go but I dig the roasty toasty look.

Hey peeps I have some great contacts with the great people of Nordstrand like Mr Cline "D-Cline Designs" the knob king and some of the guys in pup room. I asked to have them make me templates that work with Fender type bodies. The StuMac set is good for most other body shapes but I could never find a set that worked well anywhere for P or J shape. Upon request the made me a laser cut set that worked insanely great. If anyone here that regularly hangs on this corner would like a set let me know. This is not to solicit business to make money I just want to offer a solution to a problem you might have shared with me in the past. Just PM me.

Here is result...so clean. Also a ramp for the same bass...

Ok, I'm in whiny mode. . .what's on my bench has been what has been stuck on my bench for over a month. I learned more about building necks by accident than I could have learned from a book. OK, I am getting closer and the poor body is just sitting there wondering what the heck is going on. Another 10 hours should cure the problem!! lol

My boss recently told me: anybody can become an expert on about anything. . . .IN 10,000 hours!

Ok as you were!, I'm done crying for tonight!

my bench has been over 90% pickups so far this year. that's a significant change from last year where the mix was more like 20/80 with pickups being the 20.

the percentages are going to change a bit as I start working on my bass builds for the coming NAMM Show in Jan '17 (that seems so far off right now, doesn't it?)

all the best,

R

Try and use a straight router bit that does not need a bearing. Say a 0.25 straight cut bit. This will allow to not worry about the bearing. Just have to make sure the cutting part is deep enough so you only use the shaft of the bit as your guide/bearing. A router table will help a lot as well. Pick guards are a problem for because the same issues and I do not have a router table as well. I would like to pick up one of those $100 router table combos from harbor freight, for small stuff like that. Good luck!
I finally was able to get back to this project, I got a set of gfs crunchy rails, I'm using the bridge on my triple pickup build but I decided to use the neck pickup on this bass.

If I may- I think that pickguard is almost there, but could use more rounding and detail work. This is just my opinion, please treat it as such. ;) :D

Also, what's up with all the switches? Details, please? (I haz serious curious...)

The pictures make the pickgaurd look worse then it is, I used a 1/8" roundover instead of the standard bevel and the top layer is extremely thin so any tiny imperfections in the template get amplified and the actual edge doesn't show up very well. I'm going to skin it in vinyl so it will be covered up.

As for the switches I wanted to do a purely switch based wiring with a few tricks thrown in. (In no particular order) it's going to have a series/neck/parallel, a treble cut switch that only effects the neck in series, a series/split/parallel switch for the neck pickup, a fat switch, a bass cut switch that only effects the bridge pickup in parallel, passive diode distortion, mute switch(red toggle), stutter switch.

Gotcha, thanks.

Oh.., Is that all? :D ;)

Looks and sounds good! Post samples when complete, pls, (I sound like a math teacher, "Show your work and the results!" Thanks, Mrs. Frank.) :)

Yeah I need to make a simple one pickup, one tone/kill switch build.

I need to get a recording interface, I'm thinking I'm going to get a focusrite scarlette solo for sound samples after I finish the triplebucker build.

I just made a Precision V from scratch and the only thing left to do is get some better volume pots (ATM I have just some cheapo chinese ones I found in my toolbox). I used about 50 hours for the whole thing.
Specs:
alder body with a maple/wenge 5 pc neck and a ebony fretboard.
pickups: MPU precision (above 12 kOhms) and a Tesla MM5 (about 7,4 kOhms)
Wilkinson hardware
Polyurethane finish

Teaser:

I know, I should take better photos...

Jose,
Nice work! Couple of comments and a question or two. I am really a fan of the MM 5 string in that position. I like what I can get from it and have an upcoming build with MM HH config. How does the P pup work out in combo? I tend to rely on the MM for more growl, especially with a preamp. Assuming the P pup does the nice bass work in the P sweet spot. Never saw a 5 string P pup. Where did you source that? Maybe I never found one because I never looked for one! haha Thanks in advance. Finish looks nice and deep. Solvent based or water based poly?
