What's On Your Workbench?

I'm taking a step back from the CBBG after a double sided tape failure so on my bench now is a replacement pickgaurd for my main bass, I'm excited to try this new materiel, it's a recycled plastic core sandwiched between to sheets of metal so I don't have to worry about shielding, I'm going to do a vinyl wrap over it when I'm done.View attachment 751190
EDIT: Trying to create a template from the original with the router completely failed and I'm not sure why, I was using a top bearing template bit and 3/8" mdf taped it upside down, trimmed of the excess with a jig saw, set the router depth so the bearing was riding only on the pickgaurd and when I went to route it made it a couple inches just fine then it would go into the pickgaurd, checked to see if it moved nothing, repeat a couple times and now the original has a bunch of little nicks in it. So I took it inside, traced it onto the sheet, used a jig saw to get close to the line and now I'm finishing it with files, and a drum sander. Here's where I'm at now.

It sounds like you bearing was slipping in between the pick guard you were using for the template. I have had this happen to me before. This is why I need a router table. I think it would help a lot for things like this.

Shop doors and windows open all weekend. It's in the high 60s. We should be having snow but not complaining at all!

Hey, from one finisher to another. What brand of finish do you use? I have been using PPG for a while, and have also had good luck with their cheaper Shopline brand.

Those are standard size pickups so to speak. When it comes to 5 string basses there are two standard sizes. eBay has import ones if you want to go with least amount of money spent. If you want to spend just over a hundred dollars I would recommend Demarzio Ultr Jazz or Seymour Duncan SBJ 3. I think both will drop in. The ultra jazz may have a wider spacing so double check that. If it was me I would add a p bass in the neck position. After all it is a p bass. Good luck and have fun.

No, the problem is that the pickups used on this bass are not 5 string pickups, they are 4 string. So I need a 5 string pickup that will fit in a 4 string pickup rout.

Did you add those pickups? The reason I ask is they look from the pic anyway to be solid cover pickups. If this is the case and the covers are not removable it will be hard to tell if they are 4 string pickups unless this is what those basses are known for. Regardless the pickups I mentioned before should work great as they use the 4 string size covers.

My go to is House of Kolor, PPG and some shopline as well. Still looking for that perfect clear. I'm not a fan of the new stuff. Any suggestions?

I did try the water born paint as well. It has some killer colors but it's a bit of a pain to work with.

I've only used HOKs add in stuff like their Kandy Koncentrate and flakes. There are just no local dealers for their clear and solid color stuff. I am not a huge fan of Dupont brands but they work in a pinch.

Take two worked great....up until I had to use a router for the pickup cavity, was going good on the first half, then started on the second half and it caught and destroyed the pickgaurd and the template. I'm going to get some more material, a new template, and rig up a router table to try again, still not sure why Leo decided to change up pickup mounting for all his bass pickups.

Try and use a straight router bit that does not need a bearing. Say a 0.25 straight cut bit. This will allow to not worry about the bearing. Just have to make sure the cutting part is deep enough so you only use the shaft of the bit as your guide/bearing. A router table will help a lot as well. Pick guards are a problem for because the same issues and I do not have a router table as well. I would like to pick up one of those $100 router table combos from harbor freight, for small stuff like that. Good luck!

Technically no longer on my workbench, but has been for the last fews days, in between working on the pedal steel.

The Stratocaster is officially done. Made the ash body and pickguard - I don't like that 5-way selector, so I am using a Volume, 3 position selector which chooses the neck pickup, middle, or both, into a blend between the selector and bridge pickup. Real happy with the way this came out.

I've been meaning to ask... I love strat style output jacks and I've sucessfuly installed them on two basses, but never with a strat style rout. I have a few ideas on how to work it out, but I haven't come across anything definitive. How did you do yours?
