Thanks for the ideas :) I have ordered some of the parts and will give them a go.

Apologies if this has been asked before: Has anyone used a connector so that you can plug in a pickup rather than solder it in? It would make trying different pickups much easier, but the connectors I have found so far seem too big for the purpose.

Thanks :) Can I ask why you use the oil rather than dry sanding, or using water? Do you need to refinish the neck after sanding? Does the comment in the linked thread mean that the grains would reappear even if I filled them?

The neck on my Ibanez SR1340B feels less smooth than my other guitars. There seem to be a lot of unfilled wood grain grooves. Is this just part of the charm of the wood, should I use grain filler on it, or should I do something else? Someone must have noticed it because there were iron filings...

If it is spinning can't you take the other screws out and then lever the plate out with a screwdriver?

I should say, it was only the D string I had trouble intoning, and I fixed it by shortening the bolt until the Hipshot arrived.

The bridges are about USD 65 on Amazon. The basses are recent—I went all out and modded them completely, but I liked playing them even before I changed anything.

I have two. One I could intone with the stock bridge and the other I couldn't. I changed it to the Hipshot high-mass bridge which is fantastic :) I put the D'Addario short scale flatwounds on them.

I shouldn't have asked two questions at once! Were you referring to the tapewounds, or do you have to get medium scale strings for flatwounds as well? It seems to be just about impossible to find a 5 string medium scale set in Australia.

Just to be sure before I do something stupid—you can cut through the thick part of the string? Can you do it with tapewounds as well?

Are custom strings the only option for the 5 string?
