    cheap pj basses opinions appreciated

Hi, folks! I was wondering if any of you have any experience with both the Ibanez TMB100 and Cort Action PJ, or the Yamaha TRBX 174 (which I owned until recently but had to sell for let's say stupid reasons). I'm now able to get me back a new Yamaha, which I like a lot, but was just wondering...

Ebony fretboard cracking and frets displacement problem

Thank you, guys, for the the comments, suggestions and advice! I translated all comments to the friend who has the problem and (as suggested by some) he decided to contact the luthier just in case not to mess up things even more. The luthier has given detailed instructions on the phone (since...

Ebony fretboard cracking and frets displacement problem

Guys, I'm writing on behalf of a friend who doesn't speak English. He has this custom bass made by a luthier and until recently everything was ok, but all of a sudden he started noticing that unlike before, the frets started scratching his fingers - they had sprouted out of the fingerboard and...

Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage and Gold Editions

Out of those you mention, the Sire P5 and the P7 definitely deserve attention, although I'm a bit unpleasantly surprised to understand (by pure chance - from a youtube review video) that the string spacing is 20 mm rather than the traditional 19 mm (same surprise as the one a friend of mine got...

Squier 40th Anniversary Vintage and Gold Editions

What brands and particular models would you suggest rather than a Squier CV in that price range, given your experience? I was leaning towards the Squier CV and a comment like that coming from a guy like you (I've watched some of your youtube videos and I quite like them) makes me hesitant. Thank...

    OriPure P/J bass pickups

Anyone having any opinion about the OriPure Alnico 5 PB Bass Pickups? A guy from youtube says really good things about them, especially considering their price: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I'm thinking of upgrading my Yamaha trbx 174 PJ bass and was wondering whether to take the risk with...

Yamaha trbx 174 vs Squier affinity pj bass

Had the chance to test both basses at the same store today - as we all know, no video or online review can even compare to testing an instrument in person. I had decided to go for the Squier Affinity PJ, but tried the Yamaha TRBX 174 too (both sold at exactly the same price), just in case and...

    Bartolini BH2 and Ibanez bass

Yep, the P2 is indeed slightly narrower than the MK5, but I thought P2 is just a pickup shape, while it turned out it was an actual pickup - looking at the specs of P25C and the MK5C, I realized they're quite similar (apart from the underlined in red), but the P25C has two, instead of three...

Bartolini MK1 vs MK5CBC comparison video

You're absolutely right! My mistake...What "worries me" more is that the MK5C actually has 3 screw holes, while it is the P25C with 2 screw holes (so I asked the guy in the video about it) :) 5-String Original P2 Soapbar - P25C - Bartolini Pickups & Electronics

Bartolini MK1 vs MK5CBC comparison video

Here is a relatively new (posted Feb. 2022) video on Bartolini MK1 and MK5 pickups. You don't get many of those, so I thought it might be useful. The comparison is made using a Cort A5 bass:

Adding a gain trim pot to an onboard preamp?

I see...But what exactly do you mean by "normal-output" passive pickups? You have a suggestion for a specific brand? (that can replace the MK-1 Barts and originally have higher output?)

Adding a gain trim pot to an onboard preamp?

Yep, that's the first thing I did...The Bartolini MK-1 pickups are just quiet I guess (from what I read in various forums)

Adding a gain trim pot to an onboard preamp?

Thanks for the reply! I realize a new preamp with a gain boost might be the solution to low output of the MK-1s, but I was just thinking to keep the original preamp and wire an AGB (50-60 USD or so), rather than replacing the preamp (a new Bartolini preamp is around 260 USD or so - which is half...

Adding a gain trim pot to an onboard preamp?

Thanks a bunch for the detailed answer! Yes, the electronics of the preamp are totally covered (see attached photo). So what I should be looking for is an adjustable buffer and not a trim pot, I get it... :)
