I have a beautiful Cort B5 plus AS in Aqua Blue. It is constructed so perfectly and is an amazing instrument for the price.

I have a few other basses with Bartolini MK1 pickups (2 with Bart preamps and 2 with Markbass preamps), but this one seems to be more bland than the others. I brought it to jazz band rehearsal last night and I couldn't dial in a sound to cut through like I wanted. It was too generic and seemed to lack character in the mids even with the mids almost maxed out.

It is currently strung with the original (I believe D'Addario) strings. I'm wondering if a new set would give this bass more character. Lately I've really liked light gauge GHS Boomers on my basses. Does anyone have a suggestions on strings? Has anyone else experienced this "generic" sound?

I'm running D'Addario XL Chrome medium flats on my bone stock A4 (and it's nerdy twin, the TB70) through an Ampeg BA115 and it sounds very lively. I keep the pre on "high" and added a cheapo Behringer Bass Overdrive rolled off a bit to give it a little depth and presence in the mix. I moved the balance 2/3 towards the bridge pick up and it cleaned up nicely. Your results may vary.

Looks good, though the bridge tailpiece overhanging the edge is a bit odd...but you do what you gotta do.

It's recessed into the body, so trust me, it's not moving at all. This bridge is stock from the factory.

The brief period Cort was making Artisans with the 2-piece bridge made them all look a bit weird, my B5 is the same

I have an A5+ like yours and it sounds great. Just something about my B5+AS that is missing character.

The A series are "neck through", B series bolt on necks. Neck throughs are suppose to have a bit more sustain and depth. Maybe that is the difference.

The C5 I have is bolt on and same exact electronics as the B5+ AS. The C5 sounds better. I have a new set of strings that I'm going to try.

The Elricks look nice, but I'm a little surprised at the 42 mm nut width (NJS 4). I would have preferred 38 mm.
