If he's not willing to play to a metronome then find an actual musician who knows the importance of metronomes. Especially for a drummer! There are no two ways about it.

Hhmm...I've rarely seen that. Most if not all 5 stringers use that Low string to whatever tuning they use. I have a 5 string and that lowend gutteral B string does not leave the twiddling of my fingers. I'm downtuned to A for the metal music I play.
