Update: after a few weeks of back-and-forth by email with DG customer support, they determined my Element needed service. They emailed me a UPS label and I shipped the unit from NY to Helsinki. A week later I got it back good as new. Thanks, Darkglass!

I do this all the time as I am learning a tune. Usually I try to avoid shifting, but sometimes I just want the tone of the note from another string. FWIW, I use MuseScore to write out my tabs so they have full rhythmic notation.

Agree. I use it to create all my tabs with full rhythm notation. Sometimes when I can't find a decent tab online, I will download a midi file, open it with MuseScore, and keep only the bass part.
