Sidewinders, Multi-coils and other hard to find pickups

Has anyone tried using a mixer's phantom power feature to energize an active bass?

Why aren't Jazz basses wired Volume-Balance-Tone?

For a quickie introduction to the mysteries of electronics, pickups, tone controls, and amps, I suggest you read Hartley Peavey's collection of "white papers" on the subject. https://peavey.com/PDFs/HPW-Chapter-1.pdf https://peavey.com/PDFs/HPW-Chapter-2.pdf...

Why aren't Jazz basses wired Volume-Balance-Tone?

NOPE. He listened to his customers, and gave them what they wanted. How Dick Dale Changed the Sound of Rock Guitar Leo Fender: The guitar genius who couldn’t play a note Leo had this saying: ‘If I have 100 dollars to make something, I’ll spend 99 making it work and one dollar making it...

    Position in relation to drummer

I've always liked being to the right of the drummer, because I can look his way, check my fingering, and keep an eye on the guitarist, in case he hits escape velocity and leaves the stage.

Help me not buy a bass

As others have pointed out, a PJ won't sound like a P. The reason is that all components in a circuit interact. The only way around that is to have a cut-out switch that disconnects the J pickup so only the P (split coil) feeds the jack. There's a whole encyclopedia of tweaks one can do with...

THIS is what the live music biz is REALLY like today.

Moving - will the movers destroy everything?

Put them in a large container, and fill with potting wax... that should limit movement. (/jk) Skeptic mode on - I have seen "professionals" (ex: FexEx driver / delivery man) drop my packages, and KICK them up the stairs. I wish I had a video camera recording THAT.

Bass for playing the leading role in a band

Back in the 1970s, an Acoustic 370 would put a bass in your face, regardless of which model bass you played. However, that style of amplification has gone extinct. Bill Fitzmaurice speakers come to mind, as worthy heir to the throne of "in your face bass." My personal favorite is the DR200 and a...

How do you come to terms with knowing you are losing it?

I'm 67, and "old and slow". If I need fast triplet notes, I'll make a triple pick (LOL). One pluck - three notes... Or speed up the recorded track.

At what age have you started playing bass?

Mother played ukulele, so I kinda picked that up first. Then recorder. Had a cheap plastic guitar w/ nylon strings (bright red strat body) (can't recall age). Around 15, some friends needed a bass player and urged me to get one. Spent my tax refund on a genuine Japanese Teisco (Kimberly labeled)...

    New era of 15" cabs

How much do you mod your basses

When I was young and stupid, I always "modded" my bass. Didn't help much. . . I was stupid, remember? Now, I just leave 'em alone, and they are happier, now. (Sole Exception: anti-gravity strap locks. Best remedy for gravity attacks and falling basses.)
