    Double Bass Too much "thump"?

Probably related to the wolf tone of the instrument. Many (if not most) basses get murky/woofy around 200hz, usually around the Ab or A on the G strings, and also have problems with the open A string. Is it a problem in practical playing situations, or is it something more noticeable to you as...

    Double Bass Calibration

Thanks Chris! This is a really great approach. I often feel this way, as my life often doesn't let me take as much time for the double bass as I would like... working 10+ hour days engineering in the studio, being on tour a bunch playing electric bass, and still trying to maintain domestic...

Double Bass "Muted" Piano Sound on Jazz Recordings?

there was a great article I read recently that (very respectfully) argued that Rudy Van Gelder's biggest contribution to music had nothing to do with the sound, and the main contribution was that his studio, being independent and affordable, almost single handedly made a vast portion of the...

    OMG, He's using a PICK!!!!

oh god, i guess i'll bite too... electric: 80% fingerstyle, 15% pick, 5% palm muted thumb, 0% slap or other flashy stuff (not because I can't, just because it hasn't fit my aesthetic vision for the last 20 years...) upright: 93% pizzicato, 7% horrible arco John

So 70's Fender are desirable now?!

I have an unbelievably good '78 Jazz bass, and have played a few other good 70's basses... and I've also heard and played a bunch of DOGS. J

Double Bass Chinese Bass took a hit in the oversize luggage compartment (photos).

It doesn't have a good neck anymore. It has a broken neck that is repaired poorly. it's a bit mad to buy an acoustic instrument and fly with it like that, and then attempt to fix it with zero of the correct tools or materials. It would make more sense to improvise a clamp using boards and...

    Double Bass Audio Sprockets ToneDexter

Curious how well this thing works. Anyone in NYC have one and want to come make a wave map at The Bunker with a few nice mics and see how well it works in a controlled environment? J

Double Bass Chinese Bass took a hit in the oversize luggage compartment (photos).

man, i really wish i could think of a reasonable way to respond to this thread. it's pretty amazing. flying to china to buy a poopy bass, only to check it in a soft case and then trying to fix it with gorilla glue and no clamps. i know, basses are cheap in china. guess what else is cheap in...

Double Bass Chinese Bass took a hit in the oversize luggage compartment (photos).

I have a feeling the OP checked his bass in a soft case. Hoping to be corrected... but that don't look like flight trunk damage. Also, wouldn't expect to get anything from the airline... you generally have to sign away all rights when you check an instrument nowadays... personal/private...

Double Bass Why no new Jazz Standards?

one could say that I play in a novelty band too, so point taken. i have a few good friends who play in some of the touring bands for that group, and they are burning players... i just find it horrifyingly bad, and it bums me out that people are so into it, because it really is aimed at the...

Double Bass Why no new Jazz Standards?

I'm not sure there is anything worse than that Post Modern Jukebox poopie. It's really offensively terrible and in bad taste. I had the misfortune of recording a few of their earliest videos, and those were some depressing sessions. John

Double Bass Non-roundwound feeling metal-wrapped gut?

The Oliv is a completely smooth metal wrap. Feels just like a synthetic or metal core string, in terms of the surface texture (obviously the tension and diameter are like a gut string, as it is a gut core). I've been using an Oliv G (over EP Weich) for a few months and I'm in love with it. John

Double Bass How do I buy a cello?

At 3 am, go to the corner of Eldridge and Broome. There will be a shady looking older Chinese man with a trench coat on the north west corner. Don't talk to him, yet. Go to Vanessa's Dumplings. It will be closed. knock 2 bars of 3-2 rhumba clave on the locked door. Wait for 3 minutes...
