Need to diagnose problem with my bass...

    1) I'd resolder the grounds, particularly along the string ground. I'd guess that after the 'drop' a hairline (or bigger) break occured that isn't necessarily visible. I found a ground wire that looked perfectly soldered yet slid easily out of joint. Resoldering/reheating the joint solved the...

Replacing Passive EMGs with Active EMGs

If you're looking for a 'hi-fi' sound, then it'd be worth the swap. For me, I'd keep it passive & stock, using the money toward a great amp with a great built-in preamp. I play through an Aguilar, which has resulted in the flattening of EQ's in my 'active' basses, and a preference toward my...

Anybody ever installed the Sadowsky preamp?

My $.02: Keep the bass stock and use the outboard Sadowsky (or Aguilar) preamp. They're fantastic and, if you add another bass, you can use the same preamp for it too!

What are the fattest J bass pickups?

Ditto! Tough to go wrong with the Dimarzio Model J for fat. Great price, too, and humbucking! Everyone ought to have at least one 'fat' bass.

    Yo Aguilar, where's your Micro????

My AG500 & 112 cab is plenty portable for me. If I need more power, I'll add the 2nd 112. If I still need more, then I'll need to rent some power amps & cabs.

Peavey Milestone I (Fender Jazz Clone)

After about 6 years I'm enjoying a reunion with a Peavey Milestone I that I gave to a friend. An International-series clone of a Jazz bass, I'd forgotten what a great bass this is! The neck reminds me of the Will Lee Sadowsky I played a couple weeks ago - slim & comfy (moreso than other J's) -...

Best pickups for that MOTOWN James Jamerson Sound???

Oh... if only I could swap some p'ups and sound like JJ! His tone is a combo of his techinique & his equipment (PBass, flatwounds, tone control rolled down, tube amp). Some might add that the recording style & equipment of the day are contributors, too. In the end, a lot of practice & a bass...

please help - replaced pickups and elec' and not happy

Some of what's going on may be the difference between playing at room vs band volume. Tonal differences occur when db levels change. Things happen when there's a band in the mix, too. Rather than changing p'ups, investigate how you can duplicate your practice & band tones through amplification...

sound difference between outboard and onboard version of the same pre?

In theory, no, if it's the same preamp. However, if you're using passive pickups, then the type of cable will alter the tone before it gets to the outboard preamp (where it's then buffered). Use a good quality cable & you probably won't notice a difference.
