Paying to Play? Worth a read at Least for Entertainment

It's one thing to not get paid. We've all done at least a few gigs on which we didn't see a dime. But paying to work? It's a whole different beast. We should all make a conscious effort to boycott that crap.

One way to deal with piracy

The successful independent band? Not paying a percentage to corporate middlemen surely left more income for the band members.

What made you decide to play bass?

Used to play rythm guitar. Then some friends needed a substitute bassist for a gig. They tried to find an actual bassist, but they couldn't. They grabbed the first rythm guitarist they found (that was me) and asked for help. So I tried playing bass. And I loved every minute of it. I...

    In Between Bands

I started a band last month, but I was without a band for a year. But I don't get depressed when I don't have a band. I take the time to practice, experiment, and jam like crazy. There's a place half an hour from my house that does open jam sessions every Tuesday night. :bassist:

do your own sound or use sound man??

One of my best buddies is a sound technician. He does our sound if he gets into the free tab ;).

    Better Band Or Better Friends?

I don't believe in labels. Friend stays.

Do you let weather cancel your gig...?

Why? A paid rehearsal with free tap beer sounds cool.

Do you let weather cancel your gig...?

It depends on WHERE the gig will be. If it's gonna be outdoors and the weather sucks, cancelled. If it's gonna be indoors, we only cancel if the roads are utterly impassable. By "impassable", read: Jack-booted thugs will try to forcefully prevent us from going through.

How ready are you for a gig?

Put bass in case. Grab bass case, load in truck. Load amp in truck. Put fuzz pedal and cables on bag, throw in truck. 5 min overall. A bit more if I don't know the place. If I'm not sure about the place, I pick two basses, my BC Rich and my HB. I love the sound of a heavily...

One way to deal with piracy

^This. And why the Hell do you need a label anyway? They don't get the lion's share of anything if you've got no label. At 5 bucks profit per T-shirt, each t-shirt sold is one clean buck for each band member. If you upload your music on the internet, free of charge, the piracy crowd...

I am forever haunted by drummer troubles...

Go with the reliable drummer. It's one thing not to be able to make it to practice. It happens. Some folks are more lazy or flaky or whatever. If they're brilliant, it can be handled. But if your current drummer makes it a habit to miss gigs, kick him out and put a guy that WILL be there.

I know most don't like Gene Simmons.

After he endorsed the RIAA suing fans for everything they have, I don't think that can be done.

    Best/worst advice you've ever gotten

Best: Throw that damn pick away, you've got fingers! (from a friend of mine who plays upright.) Worst: You aren't supposed to do that on a bass. (from the guitard in my former band.)

    A guitarist that gets it

One of the best things about my band is that I get along really well with the guitarist: It's funny. He used to be a bassist, and I used to play rythm guitar. His former band met a better bassist, so they added a rythm guitar and he switched to it. I used to play rythm guitar, but I tried bass...

One way to deal with piracy

At least from a punk perspective, whatever cash there is to be made comes from the T-Shirts. While pirates probably won't buy your record, they're as likely as non-pirates to buy your t-shirt.
