I would suggest looking into a Sire. I have a V7 5 string and am constantly impressed with it. It's a good price, too. hell, with the budget you specified you could get two of them and string one with flats. good luck to the kid.

musical is the word. with everything set flat, there is no huge volume boost when you engage the active circuit; the passive tone is not too far away from it - it's very, very usable. I have a feeling it is going to sit just perfectly in the mix.
