Yeah, too many of the bass demo videos today are a little too "slaptastic" for my tastes. I do like Juan Alderete's format on Pedals and Effects of looping a bass line and then tweaking with the controls. He can talk a little too much sometimes, though.

Try a Fulltone OCD, preferably one of the older versions. My favorite pedal because it does exactly what you're asking for, OP.

Fo sho. But rounds are OK if they're a little dead. At least for myself, I prefer the darker, fuller sound with flats and dead rounds through OD/ distortion.

I think Geddy Lee has been quoted as saying something to the extent of, "My tone sounds really gross on its own, but sounds perfect in a mix." Like everyone else has said, it's all about that mix, man (and that Fulltone OCD). He may not have come to effects, but he certainly posted there.
