Does it actually need a preamp? That's where I'd start. How does it sound as-is?

Besides suggesting twisting knobs on bass/pedal, one thing I'm discovering via YT videos is the impressive power of an EQ pedal. There's on example vid of a 10-band that shows how much you can really dial in and out sound-wise.

I had a Kawai RSB105(?) with the Koa body and graphite neck. It was a phenominal bass, Schaller hardware and pickups. One in a long list of basses I should have kept.

On the aesthetics of the Aggie combo, if it is primarily a studio amp, the controls make sense, since a lot of studio time is done sitting. You can just reach over to tweak, whereas, with top mounted controls you may need to do some stretching/twisting to reach them. (From the seated position.)...

I had the disintegrated foam in my Combo300, cleaned it out (using very poor technique that gave AgedHorse some heart palpitations, lol), and the fartiness went away. Also went in to the amp and made sure all the molex plugs were reseated well.
