Janek Gwizdala: Buy Once; Cry Once

An adage that works for me is, ‘buy what you want the first time.’ It saves me money in the long run, I spend way less time thinking about gear, and I’m enjoying what it was I really wanted from the jump.

    Labella Super Polished

This weekend I finally put on a set that I bought last spring. I liked them enough initially but wasn't sure if I was going to keep them. But then I put some new pickups on the bass (EMG GZR) and they sound great, which might also be them breaking in. Really dig the feel, and the tone has a...

    No Audition notes allowed

This is a better plan than the time I auditioned for an originals band that didn’t know their own songs. I show up, having learned the 4-5 songs the BL said they wanted to play. The BL asks the band what they want to play, and there’s various grumblings about forgetting one song, not wanting...

I’ve got these strings and love them. Great feel and sound and have lasted a long time.

Played a used Fender CS ‘64 Reissue Jazz…

I’m of the belief that, since wood is an organic material, no two basses are going to play/sound the same. And I’ve seen some dog CS basses. That said, jump on the bass that jumps out to you! I’ve had good luck negotiating with GC. They may be able to give you more on a trade in since your...

"Something" by The Beatles...note for note or close enough?

Note for note. It’s not a hard song to play but the bass line is integral and makes the song.

    Disappointed with Fodera

Is there another fodera you want that you can order through sewetwater? If so, maybe they can rush the order so that you get credit for the time you’ve already waited.

    Damping technique/help stop ringing

Something I picked up from the Jaco video that works well for me (4 string player, and I anchor my thumb on the E string) is using my right hand pinky finger to mute the strings I’m not playing.

No longer available Cafe Walter HA-1A

I have one of these, and it’s incredibly transparent. Great piece of gear.

Save Shipping costs? Taking off neck?

Lowering the risk of damage is the big attraction for me. There can potentially be a ton of leverage on the neck if the bass is mishandled during shipping, especially if shipped without a case. Taking the neck off and shipping it in a packing tube removes almost any risk of damage to the neck.

How should I annotate 2 rests in a row

The first one is way easier for me to read, so that's what I would do if I was notating it.

    Buying Internationally off Ebay

Looking at buying something from an eBay seller in Japan (not bass related) and wanted to see what tips the board has. The seller is highly rated and the pics aren't generic photos pulled from the internet. Any other things I should look out for? And what are my responsibilities for making...
