You may want to read a little more carefully in future - I said in the original post that my current bass has Nordstrand pickups - a Fat Stack (soapbar) and a Musicman-style humbucker. I want to replace those with single coils, but obviously I don't want to have gaping holes in my bass...

Lots of things in the music world are functionally nonsense ;) it's all about personal taste and feeling 'comfortable', even if it's not a tangible reason. Personally, I don't like the soapbar sound, and I have yet to hear a humbucker that, when tapped, sounds as good as a great single coil...
