I think the easiest way would be to put a switch on the enclosure allowing you to either use the foot tread or a knob on the side for rate. That way you could use it like a stompbox or like a foot controller. Hmmmmm

The vintage spec smoothes out the sound of the wah quite a bit. It's really noticeable when you get into the higher frequencies. It warms up the tone a bit. The 12 position has quite a bit more flexibility and goes a little higher and lower as far as Q range and sweep goes.
