OP, go with your original idea. Let her in the band to sing, and tell her that the guitar spots are taken. Also encourage her to keep practicing on the guitar. Someday she will be ready for both, but not now.

I don't mind the rough edges, it might even add to the appeal.

Lay down some thick clear coat over it, maybe?

When playing guitar, I was a pedal fiend with constant GAS. Now I go straight in to my amp on bass. Between my Ibanez and Rumble, I've been completely cured of all GAS! The only reason I'm not purging all my other gear is because I would probably regret it later - I collected some pretty nice...
