I've heard this a lot. This has not been my experience at all. My electric playing has deteriorated in the years that I've focused primarily on acoustic. There is some degree of transfer between the two. And acquiring a passing familiarity with how the upright is played will surely help...

Different bassists approach it differently. Playing simply is not necessarily better than playing a busier line, and vice versa. If your playing is feeding the groove, you are not overplaying. If you are killing the groove, then overplaying could be part of the problem.

I remember looking for that book. I heard a bassist in the late 80's playing chordal harmonics like Jaco, and I asked him how he learned it. He recommended this book, and I never could locate it. Pre-Internet days, obviously.

I definitely had that "Electric Bass Licks" book back in the day (mid 80's). It's been a long time, and I don't recall that particular "tab" format. It looks like it would be about useless for someone who couldn't read standard notation.

That is technically correct. But I have often heard sections of music in which different musicians are playing the same notes called "unison," regardless of octave. E.g., the unison section of "Sir Duke."
