Does bass appearance matter for genre?

Few musicians know "all scales".. That would be ridiculous.

Does bass appearance matter for genre?

That bass is aesthetically versatile. In my opinion I'd say that tone is all that matters. Now if you're playing jazz and you have some ridiculous metalesque Schecter, that would look a bit odd.

    I have never wanted a P or J bass

I always felt like that about Gibson. I just feel like if I was to play a Gibson bass I would be considered a joke.

How many different bass tonal "families" are there?

I think you would really only need one really versatile bass to pull this off. You could get the sounds close at least. If you're wanting sounds indistinguishable from the original, you'll just need all their instruments. Haha

HOW DO I EMULATE PRIMUS' BASS SOUND?

Yeah, I'm really jealous.. If only I could play like Claypool.

What do you keep in your gig bag?

Bass, strap, two instrument cables, patch cable, BOSS CEB-3 Bass Chorus pedal, Electro-harmonix Big Muff Pi pedal, various cleaning sprays, a cloth, wrenches for adjusting truss rod and action, screw driver, a copy of The Real Book, a composition notebook, a pencil and a silver marker to draw on...

    Stage moves

My favorite stage move is being complete and total master of my instrument so even the blind are impressed. And then stick my fingers up the vocalist butt. (I'm usually on vocals)

HOW DO I EMULATE PRIMUS' BASS SOUND?

Les Claypool? Turn the bridge pickup all the way up, turn up the highs and down the lows. Flail your wrist like a fool and strike the strings with your fingernails as percussively as possible. Also, the key to getting that "Claypool" sound is to play as unmusical as possible.
