HOW DO I EMULATE PRIMUS' BASS SOUND?

Easy, go to the studio they used to record that sound and get the sound engineer, producers and staff to set you up in that room where it was recorded, use the mikes, amps and cabs, then let them use the hundred thousand dollar + audio and master suites they use, then get it compressed to that of the recording and bingo you are set, now you just need to cover the time, dedication, hard graft and experience Les has done to get him there.....or use your ears and when you get it sounding similar you have it, then fill in the blanks as they say.:) :bassist: :hyper:

Les Claypool? Turn the bridge pickup all the way up, turn up the highs and down the lows. Flail your wrist like a fool and strike the strings with your fingernails as percussively as possible. Also, the key to getting that "Claypool" sound is to play as unmusical as possible.

I take it you're jealous?

If you play closer to the neck and use the bridge pickup you can get pretty close

I don't know how intentional it is but his intonation on fretless can be a bit sketchy at times. I think he uses this weakness to his advantage to get that off-kilter "greasy" sound you mention. He also lets humor into his playing, not talking about his lyrics, which really makes a difference. Don't be afraid to play something that sounds stupid just go for it.

EMG 35dc + light or med light gauge strings + decent preamp (ADA MB-1, SVP Pro,...)

Use(d) almost this exact combo for years and we did a cover of wynona's big brown beaver. For that tune like was mentioned, bridge pup on full, neck HB & P pup mid volume, tone set to stun on treble. Slight distortion from MB-1 preamp. I miss that piece of gear now and then. Loved the tone setting/ saving ability and the phantom powered foot switch.
