    Victor Wooten....Hartke?!?!?!!!!

I saw the SMV tour back in mid-August, and Victor had 2 HyDrive stacks on stage.

Metronome vs. Drum Machine - your opinion?

I have an old program called Hammerhead. It lets you create beats fast, and would be perfect for use on a laptop. Here's a link: http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/introduction.shtml

    EQ Help?

I agree with starting EQ set flat. I do most of my tweaking on the bass controls, and usually only mess with the amp controls for fine-tuning. I believe the shape control you're referring to is tied to the midrange specifically. You can probably get a good understanding of what it will do to...

Does Anyone on the Planet Play a Maple Fingerboard Jazz?

I've got a blue Music Man Sterling with a maple neck. It plays and sounds great!

    Good Head Phones? any ideas

I use the '$99 special' Sonys, too. Always about the same price, pretty reliable, and decent sound, but not spectacular, in my opinion. I've heard good things about the AKG K271 MKII's, and have been thinking about picking them up for comparison. If you're mainly needing headphones for...

    Motown Recommendations

Slightly off-topic, but there's a Standing in the Shadows of Motown DVD, too. It doesn't have lessons or anything, but it gives a pretty good history of the studio cats who brought that music to life. I've seen it on Amazon for around $6/7.

Metronome vs. Drum Machine - your opinion?

I use a metronome to build up speed and to solidify my time, and a drum/rhythm machine to improve my groove. There's so many ways to play around a beat; locked down on top, out in front, dragging behind, or a combination. You can work on the technical aspects of this with a metronome, but...

Band Perfomance tips for good live sound (hopeful sticky)

I'm certainly no acoustic scientist, so maybe I'm stating it wrong. I have talked to plenty of bass players after the gig who said they couldn't hear themselves on stage but they blended perfectly from where I was standing. I've also been to many shows where the bass drowned out everything else...

Band Perfomance tips for good live sound (hopeful sticky)

Really good advice. In my experience, it takes a long time for most people to understand this. Bass players especially need to realize it takes longer for the low frequencies to develop when they leave the cabinet. If you're on a small stage, much of your sound will tend to blow right past you...

I see so many posts on Flatwounds, why not Compressors?

I think people are so used to the brightness of roundwounds, they are caught off guard by flatwounds. I like to string-up a set of flats every once and awhile, and really dig into some motown/r&b. That big, round, tubby sound is nice. I recently put some tapewounds on my acoustic bass, and...

Anybody else wear sports jerseys live?

My bandmates and I went to scope out a venue we'd be playing in a few weeks. The lead singer just got a brand-new Blackhawks jersey, white, not red. The place had a blacklight up above the bar and the white was really glowing. Just as he was telling me how cool he was gonna look wearing that...

What Delay Pedal do you use ?

I've had a DD3 for several years, but only use it occasionally. Sounds pretty good, though. Apparently, the new DD7 pedal from BOSS takes all the best of the DD5, and adds a bunch of the aftermarket mods people were making. Might be worth a look.

    5 string vs 4 string

To me, a 6-string is different than a 4 or 5-string. Not fundamentally different; there's nothing you can do on a 4 or 5 that you can't do on a 6. But you're talking about going higher instead of going lower. There's no reason not to have the option, I suppose, but I feel like it represents a...
