    How Important Are Scales?

In the Home I now live in there are many talented and well educated residents. Around the dinner table a week ago a published author asked a professor of English how and when the word but could be used correctly. This lead to a five minute discussion which ended up saying, it's OK to use the...

    Autumn Leaves for learning/listening?

Get the sheet music and follow the chords playing as many chord tones as your skill level will allow. Work up from just pounding roots to following the sheet music for each measure. Cannonball Adderley - Autumn Leaves (Bass) Have fun.

Jazz comping (chords) on 4 string

Something to think about; one of the open tunings may work with comping. For a time I messed around on the Cigar Box slide guitar tuned D-G-D and some TB member offered that a B on the 4th string would fill out the strings and produce a good open G tuning for our 4 string bass. Just a thought.

Jazz comping (chords) on 4 string

I waded around in comping the bass and found, like has been mentioned, I was wading around in muddy waters, so really did not give it a fair chance. Perhaps something to be dusted off and looked at again. So beyond deciding which chord tone to leave active, and which one to omit, I'm not going...

Change from fingerstyle to pick technique

Pick is as aggressive as you want to make it. Then there is always just your thumb. I've been using my thumb for a long time, and it does everything I ask of it, granted I do not play metal, punk, etc. Country, Pop, Rock and Praise is what I normally end up doing. Try the pick or just your...

    How Important Are Scales?

Scales exist because the old guys decided they needed a way of explaining (compartmentalizing) all the other stuff we do. Scales are the backbone of everything we do. Theory is our musical language and scales help us name what we are trying to do. I emphasize the box because the box makes it...

    Life Beyond The Seventh Fret

Thanks for sharing. I think a lot of us have walked in those shoes.

    Scales

Well on the piano it is all on a straight line; not in a box pattern, however, the spelling for what you need would be helpful. C major scale is all white keys. On the G major scale you have to flat the seven with a black key. You will need to know which sharps and flats will be in the scale...

    Scales

I think the following is what you want to see. Eat this monster a little bit at a time, just enough to satisfy your hunger, but, not so much all at once that it makes you sick. Copy this and hang it on the wall so you can see it when needed. My old standby chart of generic bass lines using...

    Michigander bio

Praise band - great way to keep playing our bass in a relaxed environment (it's church, and most people are on there good behavior). I loved my time with our Praise band. Hint as roots to the beat is what normally happens in Praise give some thought, if you have not already, to Nashville...
