is there a way to calculate the position of strap buttons for balance?

Thanks Max for the joke - at my expense. I’m not expecting to live this down any time soon.

You are quite right. On review I can see that I misunderstood the science. So there was no need at all to quibble about the terminology, with either term acceptable in this context. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Noob question With all this neck dive trouble why aren't headless more popular

My handcrafted solution to neck dive. Strap pin also over fret 9.

With the strap lock over the 12th fret you are certainly less likely to have a dive problem than if it is over the 14th or higher (generally speaking)

Wow. I’ve not seen one of these before. That is some fancy contraption. This sort of design is a completely different beast to your standard (bass) guitar configuration. Comparison is like apples and oranges.

This conversation is starting to drift into dangerous territory. Safe to say that some have genuine issues with neck dive and others (tough guys?) dont know what the big deal is. Both perspectives are real to those who hold them. Can we just leave it at that?

I think a long upper horn is a more aesthetically pleasing solution to neck dive than headless.

    In ear monitors for bass?

Thanks Rob. That is exactly what I was looking for (IEM with control of my foldback) I am currently learning on fretless and found out early on how vital it is that you can hear yourself playing. I was at a second audition when they insisted on putting me directly through the crap PA so they...

is there a way to calculate the position of strap buttons for balance?

What an interesting discussion, although I found it a bit esoteric and difficult to follow in places. (Perhaps this post will be seen in the same vein!) I would like to comment in relation to balance on the strap (not the knee). I suggest that this is essentially a function of the relative...

Horn / Strap Button Extender (to prevent neck dive)?

That was the prototype. See V2.0 photos below. Note the beefed up steel bracing over the join (fashioned from a door hinge).

Horn / Strap Button Extender (to prevent neck dive)?

On my 10 lb Maton MGB-4 the strap button on the horn was too close to the centre of gravity, and was carrying a much greater load. I figured that for perfect balance it would have to be in line with the fret 7. That way the two strap buttons would be the same distance apart on either side of the...

Leveling fretless fingerboard - self or pro?

Sure thing Beej. Here is my Maton MGB 4. (Shot taken before I did the setup - see reflection on the fingerboard)

Leveling fretless fingerboard - self or pro?

Hey Bruce. Thank you! I did it! I first de-stringed, then straightened the neck by adjusting the truss rod. It was almost there anyway after the strings came off. (I used a straight edge down the middle, illuminated from behind). Then I started full length strokes with the long sanding block...
