I find that, in general, students appreciate original material from their teachers. Feels like a more personal thing. And original can also be a transcription of an old etude. So yes, I agree. Thank you for this discussion SteveCS :)

"How to develop a motive or theme..." this is a very good idea. And goes right away on the to-do list. :) With children structured improvisation comes later, much later, even structured rhythmic improvisation. The process is "responding to an input with what you have in your musical memories"...

This is a great one! Piano players practice arpeggios in this fashion but for some reason bass players don't. Very useful. In this case you have the student to come up with his own fingering? I now understand what you meant. Focused and specific.

:) you are right I guess I have to get used to the medium, i.e. internet. In live lessons, one on one or group, I always give many examples of whatever we are practicing, then I ask students to invent their own. And also, knowing each student, I give different tasks to different students...
