Obviously written by the "lead bass" player. There was one or two notes that were not exactly melody. I suspect those few good-sounding notes were actually played by....*your mom*.
People vary greatly in both risk tolerance and risk perception.
Will the siren call of boosted gear be greater than risk to life and limb?
Only OP can decide that.
My personal decision making process for situations like this:
1. Do I feel like I need a weapon and/or muscle to go to a place?
2. Do I have to go? (Sometimes you do)
If 1 is yes and 2 is no, then I don't go.
Buy 3 pickup covers and stack them from the pickup up to the lower part of the fretboard. The only place you'll be able to touch the strings will be between the pickup and bridge. That'll work!
Do it yourself - it's easy and fun if you just go slow. You could try snap-on RF chokes on the feedline at the bass, and at the amp. When you figure it out be sure to come back and tell everybody I was right.
You need a 4-string EADG P-Bass, but you can't just buy it now and be happy. First, you have to buy a bunch of active 5-string basses, and when the time is right you'll get there. There's no shortcuts, I'm afraid.
I use these - they are outstanding quality and have several nice metronome/drumbeats. You can also choose to play with songs via bluetooth off your phone. It's expensive but worth it.
