a 6 string is tuned to standard B- BEADGC. but playing lead licks has more to do with skill then how many strings you have, look up victor wooten. he plays a 4 string most of the time but he can make it sing man. good luck

I play in a bar band and while my guitards have to switch instruments that are tuned differently I just pre transposed all the songs on my 6 string bass tuned to b standard. tux guitar is a great free program that does this for you. tux guitar plays all guitar pro and powertab files. good luck man

well i find slapping on my 4 string MIA jazz bass (because I have adjusted the string spacing to be wider than normal) but I really prefer the overall sound of my Ibanez btb 676 6 string. I had played 5er's for years and I would prefer a 5 over a 4 anyday.
