I was wondering what is the advantages of using a power amp with pedals over an actual bass amp? Is it cost? Better control of your tone?

I have the same amp and having issues finding a good sound with it. It's an old model as wellim not sure where to set the frequency knob being there is no markings. Looking for ideas for setting for an hard rock metal tone.
