The varnish technique I outlined worked out just fine. However, as Beowulf inferred, it was still difficult to get definition on the E and A strings. The varnish definitely helped but the E ended being more for percussive rhythm than playing notes. The A was fine but definitely not as well...

I recently got a set of Tiplop gut strings (from India) and had them put on my bass. They sounded and felt AWESOME but the E and A were just a bit too "flubby" for me. I kept the D and G strings, and put on Psychoslaps for the E and A. I was discussing this in the strings section and Tiplop...
