One might also ask if drums are a rhythm or solo instrument. they can do both. So can a guitar. So can a keyboard. And what about when there is no drummer in a band? Who does the bass keep rhythm with and for? C'mon, you can't pigeonhole what an instrument's or player's part is.

Or if the band is more than a drummer, bass player, guitarist and possibly keyboard player. I can't imagine a large band or orchestra whose members eschew reading music.

Just my opinion and experience, but even published sheet music in standard notation can be "wrong" relative to the original recording, for a variety of reasons. Tabs are the person's interpretation of the song. I see snarky comments on UG tabs about "tab sucks, dude"; "wrong key moron" and...

That's a novel idea. When I play bass along with the recording of Night Moves, for example, I follow the acoustic guitar, and it works pretty well. So I thought I was on the right track.

Quicktime. Under File -> Open put the location of the MP3. If it's an iTunes, click on Get Info and copy the location to put into the Open of Quicktime. Then in Quicktime Ctrl K to access the speed controls. I use this because I learn and play 90% with iTunes on my computer. Works great.

OK, let me figure this out... The guitarist is whole step down in DGCFAD, I'm in standard and don't want to tune down. He plays Emaj shape 022100, which is actually Dmaj in DGCFAD, so I play the notes of the Dmaj triad D F# A (if I play R 3 5). Right?

A keyboard is the best way to learn scales and chord triads and inversions, hands down (no pun intended... oh heck, yes it was :D).
