Is Playing the Drums Good for Playing the Bass?

Learn another instrument because you want to learn it, not because it will help you learn your primary instrument. Learning your primary instrument will help you learn your primary instrument. However, having learned guitar first because I wanted to learn guitar, then picking up bass because...

    Bass: Rhythm or solo instrument?

One might also ask if drums are a rhythm or solo instrument. they can do both. So can a guitar. So can a keyboard. And what about when there is no drummer in a band? Who does the bass keep rhythm with and for? C'mon, you can't pigeonhole what an instrument's or player's part is.

    Bass: Rhythm or solo instrument?

Not all songs have an intro with a bass line. And not all drummers tap out the timing to start.

Bass note not in guitar chord

    Yes, it's fine. It's a nonchord tone.

Does anyone here ever use a capo?

I'm only a bedroom player who plays along with iTunes and cds. A number of the songs are capoed as originally played. I tried playing without a capo, transposing on the bass, but it confused the heck out of me; rather, I'd wind up playing as if the guitar(s) were uncapoed. This is what I said...

Recommend guitar lessons before taking up bass?

I learned guitar first, then I learned bass. I did that because I wanted to play guitar (and still do, primarily). Wanting to learn bass came later. Learning guitar for the fretboard, chord structure and general theory helped me pick up bass quicker. Knowing the layout of a keyboard from...

    Learning Bass after playing guitar?

Same here, except I've never tried a pick on bass. I just have no interest in doing that. In fact I'm trying to move away from using a pick on guitar. I picked up guitar a little over 3 years ago, and bass about 1 1/2 years ago. Playing guitar and learning the fretboard and chord structure...

Tabs=Bad. & No, This 'Isn't' in the Wrong Category

Or if the band is more than a drummer, bass player, guitarist and possibly keyboard player. I can't imagine a large band or orchestra whose members eschew reading music.

Tabs=Bad. & No, This 'Isn't' in the Wrong Category

Just my opinion and experience, but even published sheet music in standard notation can be "wrong" relative to the original recording, for a variety of reasons. Tabs are the person's interpretation of the song. I see snarky comments on UG tabs about "tab sucks, dude"; "wrong key moron" and...

    No drummer to synch with

That's a novel idea. When I play bass along with the recording of Night Moves, for example, I follow the acoustic guitar, and it works pretty well. So I thought I was on the right track.

    No drummer to synch with

Yeah, that goes without saying, or else you have chaos and cacophony. OK, as I thought. Thanks guys. :)

    No drummer to synch with

I'm sure I'm answering my own question, just want confirmation (or contradiction). I've read that the bass player and drummer lock in and synch with each other. But if there is no drummer, just the bass player and one or two guitars... rhythm and lead... do the bass player and rhythm...

A way to slow down MP3s without altering the pitch?

Quicktime. Under File -> Open put the location of the MP3. If it's an iTunes, click on Get Info and copy the location to put into the Open of Quicktime. Then in Quicktime Ctrl K to access the speed controls. I use this because I learn and play 90% with iTunes on my computer. Works great.

Being in a different tuning then guitarist?

OK, let me figure this out... The guitarist is whole step down in DGCFAD, I'm in standard and don't want to tune down. He plays Emaj shape 022100, which is actually Dmaj in DGCFAD, so I play the notes of the Dmaj triad D F# A (if I play R 3 5). Right?

    Chord confusions!

A keyboard is the best way to learn scales and chord triads and inversions, hands down (no pun intended... oh heck, yes it was :D).
