Neck shape could be a factor too. I don't know about those two, but the 1-4 stretch feels shorter on my Ibanez Soundgear than on my Brubaker with a larger neck profile.

As a non-gigging bedroom bassist I absolutely don't need more than my starter $100 bass. I still end up with 3 more because back then I was moving to a place where good basses don't really exist. Guess I can't live without nice basses after all.

I'm gonna back it up that "it's wenge for you". But I believe that a long crack and two knots made your bass "B-stock", which would give you a much deeper discount than $175. Hell, those I saw described as B-stock were quite flawless with 20-30% off street price. I'm not sure about playability...
