    GK Fusion550

Thanks for the responses, and for MIJ-VI's review. I've loved 810s the few times I've gotten to play them, but I would also be using this amp for my double bass gigs, which wouldn't give me enough room to lug around a truly massive cabinet. I'll look into the Bergantino cabs, those sound nice...

    GK Fusion550

I'm about to go amp shopping, and I've heard good things about GK's Fusion550 tube/solid-state hybrid head. ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) Has anyone played one of these? What do you think? Any recommendations for cabs to go with it? Thanks.

    Double Bass Larry Grenadiers Attack

I was just at the Stanford jazz workshop where Larry teaches, and he mentioned that getting a "big" sound has more to do with good left hand technique than the attack of the right hand. You can have a big sound and be playing incredibly quiet. Also, he plays a large 7/8 bass. Hope that helps.

    How to tell my parents?

out of all the conservatories, Berklee is definitely the most willing to give you a good scholarship if you deserve it. They maintain a 4000 student population so that all the slackers and bad musicians there pay the tuition of the truly good players who get merit-based scholarships. So that's...

Riffs You Hate To Hear Other Bassists Sound Check With

I always play Bach. Just to psych out other bands a bit.

Dictatorship vs. Democracy: Pros and Cons

My band is basically a democracy, where anyone is free to bring musical ideas to the table, but where the "leader" (meaning in this case songwriter, frontman, and founder) has veto power which can often be persuaded away anyway. In rehearsals I usually end up being a "bad cop" when crap isn't...

Worst beating any of your gear has taken?

nothing that bad has ever happened to my gear, but friend's double bass's cable wrapping around the endpin mount (the one that supports all the tension created by the strings and tailpiece) broke during sound check for a gig. His bass literally imploded 5 minutes before he had to play.

    Ah... the bass player personality...

I'm definitely the "rational" one in my band, but only because everyone else is batpoop insane.

    overdrive vs volume pedal

ok, that's what I thought. I didn't really expect one pedal to be able to perform both functions well, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting money on something I really didn't need.

    overdrive vs volume pedal

Sorry, I'm a bit new to effects, but if I adjusted my bass and amp with the volume pedal set in the lower part of its range and kept it that way, couldn't I use it to increase my volume for certain parts of a song? I'm only asking this because I saw an electric violinist doing this. The pedals I...

    overdrive vs volume pedal

Is it worth it to get both an overdrive pedal and a volume pedal? I'm thinking about using the overdrive as a quick way to alter my EQ mid-song (i.e. go into a snarly punk sound or a fat bassy sound) and keeping the volume pedal set at halfway so i can boost my volume for solos. My question...

    songs - they like simplistic, I don't

every time i write horn parts for my band, the leader will turn them down. And on the rare occasions where he offers constructive criticism, it's really cryptic and meaningless and even after I attempt to follow it he'll still throw the parts out. I think it's just an issue of him being...
