i've heard good things about nordstrand. it appears to be a dead magnet in the pickup. The A string mag does nothing. I believe bartolini makes single coils...i am pretty sure that is what i have.

I've had this happen as well, but the battery compartment was fully unwired. The signal is pretty weak, and I am not sure if it was designed to be a passive pickup. My bass is a 96' and I have often wondered if I should go passive.
