Double Bass Anyone know much about subharmonics?

I came across this interesting study about bass timbre: Invalid Link Removed On page 53 there was a large section devoted to subharmonics. Apparently, these are the direct opposite of harmonics, i.e. notes that sound lower than the fundamental. The way to achieve these subharmonics(according...

    Writing/Playing Music Expressively

That's probably half the problem, terminology is not my area of expertise despite what I try to do to remedy that. To me that means doing something more than just writing something that sounds nice, I mean sure that is a very big part of it. If I'm trying to expressive, or make something...

    Writing/Playing Music Expressively

I agree, that does seem a lot more fitting. There once was a time when I thought slow songs could communicate the same way you read a 300 page novel, takes a while until you can force yourself to like it, I know better now. One of the first examples of great communication of a 'story' I've...

7 reasons why no one's coming to your shows

Seems like an extremely cynical view on things, you CAN improve on all these factors, and to me, and sometimes improving means accepting what you find hard to accept.

    What would you do???

What would I do? Well if it's my unplayable 36 inch bass I would be mildly upset, if it was any other bass, I think I'd be scared straight into having a padded hardshell case with locks on it. But yeah, common sense to not leave instruments in the studio.

    Basses That Should Be Banished

I like the way you think, 'shun' seems a little less harsh. Looking at the new RockBass StarBass gave me that 'almost a good idea' feeling, but I'm someone would say otherwise. So thank god we got as many different designs/features/sounds as you could want

Grammys relying too much on older stars?

What happens then? Mighty good question. I would imagine the Grammys will change to in order to keep with the times, but from what I've heard the Grammys don't always follow the same philosophy, sometimes it's about the most artistically capable artists and sometimes it's about the commercially...

    Writing/Playing Music Expressively

When I'm talking to non-musicians or sometimes fellow musicians, when ever I mention things like 'playing expressively' or 'Being artistic when writing songs' I tend to get a few weird looks, now I don't expect every person who doesn't play or write music to appreciate the artistic qualities of...

    First real "jam"

Surprised when you were told to turn the bass up? same here, I was pleasantly surprised when I was told to put up my already band-overpowering Music man on my first jam, playing and listening to metal for most of the time I played bass would probably be the reason why I thought that...

    Basses That Should Be Banished

It's a never-ending story and while just about everything about basses is subjective, I've often looked back at the choices I've made gear-wise and think " What was the logic behind that?"

Do Gutiarists Just Pretend To Set Up?

I was once playing in a big band with a full saxophone section, 2 trumpets, a trombone, piano and not one but two rhythm guitarists (I understand it's not as uncommon as I'm making it sound like). On just about every practice session, I plug in, find the tonal sweet spot and then do some...

In my local want ads this morning

Looks like he's just used words in places for the sake of it, I try to use good terminology, but I have NO idea what he means by 'technique collision and slicing full of mini riffs'

    Basses That Should Be Banished

Sometimes I walk into a bass shop or look in their catalog and find basses that just really bug me, maybe because they sound awful or because they might as well be a Fender P-Bass with someone else's logo on it. This can annoy me so much to the point I think they just shouldn't be, call it an...

    Best Way To Play Chords?

You will usually have to stretch if you include all the notes in a chord, I usually omit the 5th when playing just major and minors with or without an added 7th. I use 9ths a fair bit, and it that case I ignore the 3rd (some people will against this, I know), unless I barre it in the form or a...

What Should I Look For In A Fretless?

I'm considering getting a fretless bass as I'm really starting to get into the fretless soloist playing style, but I really don't know what to look for, I like to play jazzy tunes (Think of Steve Bailey) and a lot of melodic, expressive pieces (Think of Eric Czar and Jonas Hellborg). Some...
