I am also working through Hrabe. I do not memorize the etudes, just understand its pattern and the concept its trying to stress. Work through it slowly and write in the fingerings and I'm sure it will come.

My bass is a Shank's Shop model bass (not sure which) but is Romanian so it would not be the same. I love it to death and would be comfortable buying any bass that Shank puts his name on.

I too was in a very similiar position. The peice i chose was "Romance and Rondo" by Franz Keyper. It has both slow and fast movements. Its a possibility and I think is worth looking into.
