    Newbie Wiring Help!

That isn't a terrible idea. I've got an old headphone->RCA cable kicking around somewhere that would make it pretty easy. I'll give it a shot when I have some spare time and just see what happens.

    Newbie Wiring Help!

Final update: My replacement preamp came last week, I immediately put it in a drawer to keep it away from the puppy and safe. Then, yesterday, I set to work with my soldering iron and attempted to fix my bass. It did not go well. After about an hour and a half of testing, I had nothing. Th...

    Newbie Wiring Help!

Well, I haven't heard any bad news since Wednesday, so I'm still hopeful. What sucks though is that since they're sending it free of charge, I can't really harass them for a tracking number. I don't want to be rude.

    Newbie Wiring Help!

So, just a fun little update for all those anxious viewers out there, since I know you just can't wait to hear from me again... My new Dean preamp assembly came on Tuesday. I was very excited. I opened the package as soon as I got home and checked it out. It looked a little different from...

    Newbie Wiring Help!

I'm still anxiously awaiting my replacement preamp from Dean, so no real update as of yet. I did take a look at the pots and jack though and decided that even though Dean's sending me a complete assembly, I'm going to cut and solder in just the preamp (with a little liquid electrical tape on...

    Newbie Wiring Help!

So I just got an email back from Dean, and they actually will sell me a replacement preamp, prewired with pots, for $20 shipped! I can't ask for an easier repair than that!

    Question about Basses and Ex(s)

Personally, I see the divorce as being irrelevant to this conversation. If there's no sentimental attachment, then do with the basses as you would if you had bought them for yourself. So basically, sell them to me for really cheap! ;-)

Buying Used Without Trying - Your Experiences

I bought my Dean sight-unseen from Guitar Center and had it shipped in. I'm still very new and learning, but it came in in great shape, well packaged, and ready to play. I can't say how good the setup is, due solely to my inexperience, but I played it for months without any issues until the...

    Newbie Wiring Help!

So I think the plan right now is to bypass the treble/bass pots and just wire it directly so I can get back to playing. I'm not to the point right now where I even really use them, so it won't be a big loss. Then I'll just plan to upgrade all of the guts in one shot further down the road.

KBD - Yep, that's my baby.

    Newbie Wiring Help!

I saw that one, it looks like a great deal. I'm just trying not to spend that much, since I only paid $150 for the guitar. If I get to the point where I have to drop the same cash to get operational again, I'll probably just buy a second bass to play for a while while I upgrade the Dean.

    Newbie Wiring Help!

Honestly, I wasn't really listening to the tone with the direct-wired pickups. Since I'm still very new to the electronics side of things, I decided I'd test the pups without removing any of the connections - which meant balancing the bass very carefully while I jumped the wires from the rear...

    Newbie Wiring Help!

Well, the pickups are definitely active, and they seem to still be ok. I jumped the pups to the jack to test them as recommended and had no signal until I powered it up. Once there was power and ground, I had tone. The preamp is definitely shot. It starts smoking the moment power is applied to...

    Newbie Wiring Help!

Ok. Disregard my comment about only having 2 wires from the pups, they split further down where I couldn't see. Each "wire" is in fact 2 wires in one sheath.

    Newbie Wiring Help!

So I've opened up the access panel and I'm starting to take a look at it and I noticed something odd. While I expected to see 4 wires coming from the pickup cavity (excluding power, which seems to run directly from the battery cavity), there are only 2. So are the pickups wired in series? That...
