    Double Bass Which pickup?

A Schertler electrostatic pickup should fit. It will require a small piece of wood being glued to the bridge (as with any bridge). I think the Schertler is a better choice than the Realist, both when it comes to sound and mechanical/electrical quality. (Strictly IMHO)

    Tuning with harmonics

With all respect I think this is a rather common misconception. In any choir, string quartet, big band, etc. there is intonation and small adjustments going on. For instance, minor thirds are sung/played slightly sharp (compared to their equal-tempered counterpart), minor sevenths slightly flat...

    Tuning with harmonics

Hm, this assumes tempered pitches are always "correct" or closest to what is "in tune" - which is definitely not correct :-) Try this with a newly tuned grand piano (or perhaps a synthesizer/etc): 1) tune the D string to the piano 2) tune the A string from the D-string using harmonics (you...

    Double Bass Lowering the bridge

Don't do it :-) At least not if the bridge is of otherwise good quality. Depending upon what kind of adjusters you have, perhaps you could remove them temporariiy and use something else in their place? (Two brass pins and some washers to get a reasonably correct height). Just an idea, I...

Double Bass Prices going up, up, up...

Hm, that is still $50 less than in Europe/EU (approx. $190 from mail order suppliers, VAT included). Strange... or is it only because of higher taxes?

    1/4" plugs?

Any 1/4" plug and ordinary lamp cord will do.

    Double Bass USB turntable info?

If you get a small RIAA preamplifier, you can connect your turntable to about any audio input on any equipment (if you connect it directly to an iMic etc. you will need a program that compensates for the HF emphasis added to vinyl records, otherwise the sound will be very strange and thin). Such...

Double Bass Hindemith sonata / orch. tuning

Is the Hindemith sonata piano part available for orchestra tuning? Or is a (non)transposed solo part for orch. tuning available (or, rather, has anyone played it in orchestra tuning, i.e. a major second above)?

    Double Bass Gary Peacock info?

I just read through parts of that thread, I didn't know about it until now. Very entertaining! I totally understand Mr. Peacocks stance. As for his tone, there are some older records with Paul Bley and others where some of the tracks were made before the arrival of steel strings (at least on...

Double Bass YOUR sound, your voice

I think the idea of only playing what you can also sing is not to be taken literally. On the other hand it can lead you to some interesting and, hopefully, rewarding exercises and insights, and I think it is in this aspect it has its strength. For instance, it is very easy to come up with...

    Double Bass pickup confusion

Cut the ground wire (and insulate the output jack from the strings by putting it on the "silk" winding). Grounding the strings is an electrical hazard, and totally unnecessary with modern amplifiers and cables. In addition, the ground wire tends to rattle.

Double Bass Humidity in the house / Dampits

Yes, sorry, I meant "dampits absorb moisture" is not correct (or, rather, it does not absorb any more moisture than a piece of cloth or an empty bowl). Silica gel has this property - and is used to control humidity in packaging etc. - but only when initially dry. If you first immerse it in water...

Double Bass Humidity in the house / Dampits

That is not correct. A piece of plastic foam (however in a piece of beautiful, green hose) cannot suck water out of the air. When the humidifier is in normal use, it is wet and water evaporates until it is dry. The reverse thing cannot happen, just as clothes hung out for drying won't get wet...

    Double Bass Page-Turning

Hm, what was a photocopier like in 1957? :-)
