What makes a bass sound thinner than another.

This is very interesting. The one I turned fretless does tend to sound somewhat over sensitive. It picks up everything (even a light tap on the headstock gets amplified!), sometimes I like it, sometimes it just feels like it's not a very clean sound. I've had an engineer say that it sounded...

What makes a bass sound thinner than another.

I've held basses in my hands, unplugged, and when I play them I can feel that they sound thinner, there is a certain low end vibration that they don't have. Especially really cheap basses. I also find that when plugged in, such basses truly sound they way they feel unplugged. Because of this...

    Bass Sounds... Weak?

Yes, I have tried raising the strings already. I'm pretty sure that one helped with the general output level of the bass.

    Bass Sounds... Weak?

Yeah..... definitely is some attachment. I had 'chosen' this bass the first day I saw it, apparently the image of a jazz bass had been burned into my subconscious from watching Marcus Miller and a bunch of other people and that influenced my choice. This was the only J style model in the shop...

    Bass Sounds... Weak?

Yes, I probably wasn't clear enough, I was agreeing that a string brand change might do it. I had tried a Da'adario set that seemed to sound a lot better, but that memory is a little foggy. I still have them somewhere. I'll try them again. I have a show in a few days so I'm trying to avoid...

    Bass Sounds... Weak?

Hmm, string change, noted. I seem to remember such a thing happening to me when I tried on a Daddario set but I don't want to agree too quickly here for the following reason: This bass was my only bass for a long time, there were several times when I just convinced myself that the problem was...

    Bass Sounds... Weak?

What I mean is this, one can usually play a bass unplugged and get a feel for it's sound. There is a bass I own that just sounds really "light" when I play it unplugged, and of course the same problem manifests when it's plugged in. I know it was a cheap model, but I've played other cheap...

Noise goes away when I go wireless.

Interesting. I'm taking another passive bass to the place tomorrow.

Noise goes away when I go wireless.

Your explanation makes sense to me and the shielding part sounds similar to other opinions I've read. Thanks. I have a few more scenarios to try. I'm taking another bass to the place tomorrow. I'll see how that goes.

Noise goes away when I go wireless.

Thank you. I don't know much about electricity but everything you have said is what I'd hoped for when I last tried this bass earlier this year. After trying many things to no avail, I tried wireless in hope, but the noise was still present, which really confused me. I gave up after that. A...

Noise goes away when I go wireless.

I just want to know what possible reasons exist for a noise that never goes away with cables, to disappear completely with wireless.

Single coils wired in series... serious noise problem.

Yeah. Thanks a lot guys. It's awesome here. I'm very very grateful. (I fell asleep on the page last night☺). Basically have to do all the wiring properly again and learn more about shielding finally. I'll definitely find some time to get to it. Love talkbass.com!

Single coils wired in series... serious noise problem.

Okay, the ground wire is connected according to a p-bass schematic I followed. Also, it's currently wired in series so both pickups always playing together, with one volume and one tone knob. No room right now to use only one pickup. The combined sound is thick and nicer for me. I think I'll...

Single coils wired in series... serious noise problem.

Okay. You've done it. Good to know! Yes I have the normal noise although it's louder than usual (there's another bass in the room to confirm this). When I touch the strings, it lessens. But its still quite noticable. So... pickups? and... then proper wiring.

Single coils wired in series... serious noise problem.

Ah yes. Polarity was easy to check so I did. They are opposite. Reverse winding and shielding are my current options. Ofcourse I'll also resolder everything. Would've loved to hear from somone who has done this exact sort of modification. I just want to hear that it works fine. I've only seen...
